House votes to drop term limits on Speaker Robert DeLeo

State Rep. Geoff Diehl, who’s own minority leader doesn’t operate under term limits, said he disagrees with the argument that the speaker’s lame-duck status would harm the House, adding that it seems Democrats already have an “heir apparent” for speaker in House Ways and Means chair, Brian Dempsey. “I know the Republican caucus feels strongly that a 7- or 8-year term, it was good enough for the Senate President who just retired, it should be good enough for him as well,” Diehl said, referencing Therese Murray, who left the Senate in January. “When you have the power, you make the rules,” Diehl later added. “That’s how it goes here.”

Chang-Diaz’s proposal has support from 17 Democratic co-sponsors, including Pittsfield Sen. Ben Downing, Pittsfield Rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier, Northampton Rep. Peter Kocot, Springfield Rep. Jose Tosado, and Holyoke Rep. Aaron Vega. She also received support Tuesday from two of the legislature’s fiscally conservative Republicans – Rep. Shaunna O’Connell of Taunton and Rep. Geoff Diehl of Whitman.
